Largely dependant on seed bearing trees, the nomadic Evening Grosbeak gathers in large flocks wherever these seeds are plentiful. One year there may be plenty and another year very few. Providing a feeder ensures their return each fall but beware, they consume huge amounts of sunflower seeds and can empty a feeder in no time. They have a stout strong bill that can crack even cherry pits and as spring draws near it changes to a greenish hue.
Noisy and often quarrelsome they are none the less wonderful to watch clothed in their sunshine bright colors on a cold winter day.
