Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds

One of the special delights of summer is the return of the hummingbirds. Those of us who hang up feeders outside our windows are rewarded with the constant flickering and jousting of these iridescent colored birds. Said to be the world's smallest bird, they are found only in the Americas. They often migrate as far as Central America leaving our area at the end of August and returning in late May. Hummingbirds are the only birds who can fly backwards and hover for long periods of time, their wings beating eighty times a second in order to hover over a flower or at a feeder. Tiny but aggressive, the female will swoop even at large intruders to protect her nest which is made up of soft plant material bound by cobwebs. She will incubate two bean size eggstwo to three times a summer and raises her family alone. Truly one of God's most amazing creatures.
